Eggs-travaganza Assignment

This in-class group activity was all about the EGG. Each team of three students were given an egg and were shown a few videos with information on the health attributes and processing of eggs. Then they were given about 45 minutes to think of a problem that needed to be solved and work collaboratively to write a page of copy, advertising an egg (trying to solve that problem). This was intended to not be brand specific, but to just advertise the egg itself. My students are so imaginative...as some did extra research to find new and creative ways that eggs can be used, in addition to the videos that were shown in class.

After they presented their copy, they were given additional time to write a poem about an egg..oh my my my...

Problem: Different uses for eggs

Looking for something that you can eat for any meal? We know EGG-actly what you’re looking for! In countries all around the world eggs are eaten for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Whether you like them scrambled, poached, over-easy, or as an omelet eggs provide nutritional value at anytime of the day. Not a fan of eggs by themselves? Well try using them as an ingredient for cakes, cookies, or other baked goods. In America eggs are used in appetizers, snacks, and as the main course. In Asia eggs can be found in typical dishes such as fried rice, and different types of soup. China produces the most eggs at about 160 billion per year compared to the U.S.A, which only makes 65 billion eggs per year The reason eggs are such an essential part of the worlds diet is because of the benefits it provides your body. A typical egg contains 6.3 grams of protein, vitamin A, D, E, and K, while only containing 80-120 calories per egg. On a 2,000-calorie diet a typical person should get 50 grams of proteins, and one egg can give you 12% of that total. Eggs are also great for your eyes; certain studies show that people who eat eggs everyday have a lower risk of developing cataracts. Are eating eggs not your style? Beauty salons will typically tell their customers that regular egg application to your hair can make it healthy, smooth, and shiny. In the USA eggs are essential to having a successful Easter holiday. From Easter egg hunts to decorating eggs, they are necessary to make sure the kids enjoy themselves.

Problem: Egg (Balanced Breakfast/Day)

Every day you start your morning with coffee, read the newspaper, eat some breakfast and get ready for work.  When you make your breakfast, are you making sure that you get the right nutrients you need to start your day? After all, breakfast is the most important meal of your day! With this small, oval shaped, protein-packed addition to your routine, you can make sure you get what your body needs. These little delights can be scrambled, poached, fried, boiled and served many other ways. Of course we are talking about THE egg. When you add an egg to your morning spread, you make sure you are getting vitamins A, D, E, K, and a proper start to your day.

Your average egg starts on a farm not too far from here where they are processed and packaged to the best of standards. Your eggs get cleaned before going through vital tests such as being checked for cracks, weighed for grade and sorted. Afterwards, they are sent to a store near you for your earliest shopping convenience. Whether you choose Grade A or E, they are guaranteed to make your day sunny side up.

Problem: Not defined.

Waking up to a sun dazed room? A late last night lead to an early morning. Strangely, it wasn’t your state-of-the-art, nuclear meltdown, alarm clock that woke you from your mummified slumber.  No, it was a feeling, or rather an invigorating aroma. It reminds you of those country breakfasts your mom used to whip up at a moment’s notice. It’s the kind of meal that sticks with you all day. Coffee has lost its effect, energy drinks wont resurrect you, it is a matter of sustenance; it’s a matter of the original organic egg.

These low-calorie, healthy, and round things are also good for a hangover among other things. It happens that eggs contain albumin. Those cells that you killed the night before, well the protein in eggs help rehydrate cells. You can chug them raw too, just like the vodka shot you chugged the night before. But hey, you don’t have to do that. You can get creative with how you want to eat your eggs. There are hundreds, if not thousands of ways you can cook your eggs.  Yes, something small and round can be healthy for you and inexpensive for your pocket. You can’t go wrong when you know you’re feeding a low-calorie and delicious breakfast to your empty stomach. Even if the eggs are brown or white, it doesn’t matter; both contain the same healthy stuff. It just happened that they came from different hens.

Eggs look plain and boring to the naked eye, but as you now know, eggs can be used for thousands of different things, like curing your tremendous hangover, and giving you a nutritious breakfast.

So what are you waiting for? Add those eggs to your morning coffee.

Problem: Fat Children and targeting their moms

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention “The percentage of children aged 6–11 years in the United States who were obese increased from 7% in 1980 to nearly 20% in 2008. Similarly, the percentage of adolescents aged 12–19 years who were obese increased from 5% to 18% over the same period.”

These children might begin their day off with a sugar filled bowl of Cocoa pebbles. In one serving, a cup, of Cocoa Pebbles there are 147 Calories and 2 grams of fat. If you were looking for the healthy side of this bowl of sugar, you would find 0% of Vitamin A, C, D, E and Calcium. On top of all of this, one box of cereal can run around 5 dollars.

Now compare that breakfast to a serving portion of 2 eggs, served hot and ready for your child. This fragile egg is a simple source of nutrients. An egg contains not only protein, but also several vitamins including A, D, K, E and Omega 3. An egg can contain less than 2 grams of saturated fat. This inexpensive daily breakfast, a carton running around 2 dollars, can not only fill a small child’s belly but give them the necessary vitamins to have a productive day at school.

With a white (or brown), thin shell, made with pores, it keeps the vitamins and protein safe, while looking uniform throughout. However, not all eggs are the exact same, there are different grades, to include A, AA, and B.  Within those grades there are different sizes based on their weight.

Once bought from your local grocery there are numerous uses. Cooking is the most common use for these delicate sources of life. While eggs on their own are healthy, adding too many additives, such as salt, butter, and fatty oils, can make a breakfast once again an unhealthy choice.

When choosing a meal for your child you should think about all the facts, and the fact is eggs should be your choice when it comes to what your child is eating.
Don’t let those brightly colored cereal boxes blur your vision, just pick an egg.
